The National Blood Service (NBS) has refuted claims that ejaculation by men during sexual activities reduces their blood level.

According to a report by myjoyonline, the service, in a statement issued on August 20, indicated that the assertion of blood loss during ejaculation was completely false.

The statement by the NBS was in reaction to a claim by the Chief Executive Officer of Chartma Herbal Health Centre, Dr Charity Twumasi, that a single ejaculation released “400 million cells” and equated the volume of seminal fluid to “one pint of blood”.

Dr Twumasi also claimed that regular sexual intercourse could result in life-threatening blood loss.

In its statement, the NBS said that the claims of the CEO were scientifically inaccurate and potentially harmful to public understanding of blood donation, sexual health and prostate-related conditions.

“No Circulatory Depletion: Blood is contained strictly within the circulatory system. Ejaculation does not deplete, draw from, or impact systemic blood volume. Standard sexual activity causes absolutely zero blood loss,” the service is quoted to have said.


It further stated that the claim that some amount of ejaculation is equivalent to a volume of blood loss is false because there is no comparison between the volume of an ejaculation and a pint of blood.

It explained that even though ejaculation contains millions of microscopic sperm cells, the total volume of seminal fluid is usually between 2 and 5 millilitres, which is way less than the volume of one pint of blood, approximately 473 millilitres.

The service urged the public to desist from making such claims because it “could also have wider public health consequences by confusing the public about how blood volume is lost or replenished, potentially undermining voluntary blood donation campaigns.”
