Dr. Lawrence Agyeman Serebour, Medical Director of St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital in Accra, has warned about the dangers of smoking shisha.
He says, an hour-long session of shisha is the same as smoking 100 packs of cigarettes.
Speaking at a heart health screening event in honor of World Heart Day, Dr. Serebour highlighted the serious health risks posed by shisha, which has gained popularity, especially among the youth at pubs and lounges.
Emphasizing the severe impact it has on the heart and its contribution to the rise in cardiovascular diseases, Dr Serebour cautioned, “Smoking shisha is a ticking time bomb.”
He added that “the habit is contributing to the growing global toll of over 20 million deaths annually due to heart disease.”
The event, organized to raise awareness about heart health, attracted participants who praised the initiative, acknowledging the importance of regular health checks and education.
Many urged the hospital to continue such programs to promote healthier lifestyles and combat the increasing heart diseases in the country.
