GHS investigates ‘Cholera outbreak’ after nine confirmed cases in Accra

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated an investigation into a potential cholera outbreak following the confirmation of nine suspected cases in the Ada West and Ada East districts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a statement released by the GHS, it said the first confirmed case was reported on October 4, 2024, in the Ada West District. The patient presented symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain after attending a funeral in the Ada East District. Shortly thereafter, additional cases were reported in Ada East, leading to heightened concerns.

“As of 11′ October, nine cholera cases had been confirmed in both districts (Ada West and Ada East),” the GHS statement confirmed.

In response to the outbreak, the Ghana Health Service has taken swift action by initiating a comprehensive investigation, including an environmental assessment to determine the source and spread of the infection.

Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) have also been activated at the national, regional, and district levels to coordinate the response.

The Ministry of Health and GHS, in collaboration with relevant partners and sectors, assured the public of their commitment to early detection and prompt response to public health emergencies.

The GHS urges the public to remain vigilant and adhere to hygiene practices to minimise the risk of cholera transmission.
