West Africa Pharma & Healthcare Expo opens in Accra with focus on digital health and local production

The 4th edition of the West Africa Pharma and Healthcare Exhibition officially opened on Monday, May 6, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, bringing together over 150 exhibitors from around the world.

Organised by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Astrovision Global FZCO Dubai, and ACE Group, the three-day event aims to promote universal healthcare in Ghana, strengthen local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and encourage strategic business partnerships across West Africa.

The exhibition, which will run until May 8, features participants from countries including India, Turkey, the United States, Egypt, Italy, and Ghana. It serves as a platform to showcase innovation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and promote policy dialogue within the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Samspon Ahi, said the event, themed “E-Pharmacy & Digital Health,” underscores the role of technology in reshaping healthcare systems in Ghana and across the region.

“This exhibition provides a platform for knowledge exchange, business partnerships, policy dialogue, and exposure to innovations and trends that can accelerate the growth of the local pharmaceutical and healthcare industries,” he stated.

Hon. Ahi emphasised that Ghana cannot afford to be left behind in the ongoing digital transformation of global healthcare. According to him, digital platforms have the potential to enhance efficiency in service delivery, improve access to essential medicines, and address disparities in healthcare delivery.

“The government is committed to supporting initiatives that enhance local production, reduce dependency on imports, and improve the competitiveness of Ghanaian companies in the global marketplace,” he said. “We will implement targeted policies, including the development of industrial parks, tax incentives, access to finance, and strategic business regulatory reforms.”

India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Manish Gupta, also addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of regional integration and cooperation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He encouraged exhibitors and visitors to explore opportunities for developing regional supply chains and strengthening trade relationships.

“Expanding digital infrastructure, supporting e-commerce innovations, and ensuring that regulatory systems accommodate responsible digital healthcare solutions are vital areas of collaboration between Ghana and India,” Mr. Gupta noted.

He urged entrepreneurs and developers to take full advantage of the growing demand for digital health solutions and the unique networking opportunities provided by the exhibition

Project Director of the exhibition, Mr. Praveen Singh, described the event as more than just a trade fair, but rather a shared vision to create a healthier and more connected Africa through equitable partnerships and knowledge sharing.

“This expo reflects our common goal to build a stronger, healthier Africa by promoting fair trade and the exchange of ideas,” he said. “India and Ghana have a long-standing friendship, rooted in democratic values, mutual respect, and expanding trade relations.”

Mr. Singh highlighted that trade between India and Ghana reached approximately USD 2.87 billion in 2023–2024, with India exporting over USD 1.1 billion worth of goods to Ghana. A significant portion of these exports consisted of pharmaceutical and medical products, reinforcing India’s role as a key partner in delivering affordable healthcare solutions.

“Ghana, with its stable economy, abundant resources, and youthful population, offers excellent prospects for win-win partnerships,” Mr. Singh added. “By combining Indian technology and expertise with Ghana’s resources and reform-minded leadership, both countries can foster sustainable development and improve the lives of their people.”
