The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called Ghanaians, especially women, to prioritise breast cancer screening for early detection.
She made this call at the launch of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025 and the commemoration of International Day of Older Persons on Wednesday in Accra.
The Vice President noted the urgent need for early detection and proper treatment in tackling breast cancer.
She advised the public that although the disease affects both men and women, it continues to pose one of the greatest health challenges for women, with ripple effects on families and communities.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged Ghanaians to embrace regular screening and self-examination as lifesaving practices, stressing that this year’s theme should be taken as a collective call to action.
She also called for an end to the stigma surrounding breast cancer, emphasising that illness is never a choice and that patients deserve empathy, support, and dignity.
The Vice President commended the elderly for their immense contributions to national development.
She called for greater respect, care and protection for the elderly, relating them as pillars whose wisdom and sacrifices held society together.
The Vice-President explained that ageing was a process and the role of older people in families and communities must never be overlooked.
“Don’t think anyone is just born for this role; it is a process. They play their roles, and the responsibility rests on their shoulders, what we can do, at the very least, is to show them respect, support and understanding.
“When we approach them with the right respect and humility, they will always be there for us,” she added.
The launch of the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons were held under the theme “Catch it Early; Treat it Right; Survive it.” The event sought to raise public awareness on breast cancer prevention and early detection, while drawing attention to the rights and well-being of women and older persons.
The International Day of Older Persons is observed every year on October 1st to celebrate the contributions of senior citizens and raise awareness about the challenges they face. It’s a day to honour their role in society and highlight ways to support their well-being.
