Africa: African Countries Temporarily Suspend AstraZeneca Vaccine

Several African nations including DR Congo, Cape Verde and eSwatini have suspended the use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine citing possible side-effects. The move follows similar measures by European states, writes Daniel Pelz for Deutsche Welle. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) urged countries to continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine as part of their vaccination strategies. “At this time, WHO considers that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh its risks and recommends that vaccinations continue,” the organisation said in a statement. As of March 18, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached 4,063,411. Reported deaths in Africa reached 108,684, while 3,650,546 people have recovered and 5,327,320 vaccinations have been administered.
