Our skin goes through its share of problems due to our lifestyle, our surroundings, ageing and other health-related problems. Dryness and acne are common skin issues, as is a more serious concern like eczema. The good news is that you can find many skin-nourishing ingredients in your kitchen to relieve yourself from the agony of these skincare issues. While you should always consult an expert before trying home remedies as they can react differently for each person, these home hacks are free of preservatives or harmful chemicals. Let’s tell you some skincare hacks you can try.

What are some of the most common skin problems?

The skin is susceptible to wear and tear over the years. Here are some of the common skin problems that you may face:

1. Dry skin

Some people are born with dry skin, but sometimes the cold or dry weather, harsh soaps, sun damage, bathing too frequently or using hot water to take bath can make your skin dry.

2. Acne

Whether you are a teenager or not, acne is a common skin condition that can affect women of all ages. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause can contribute to acne breakouts, says dermatologist Dr Vichitra Sharma. It often appears as pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, mostly on the face, chest and back

3. Eczema

Eczema is a group of skin conditions that cause redness, itching and inflammation. Women are more prone to atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema characterised by dry, itchy patches of skin, the expert tells Health Shots. It can occur in various parts of the body and may worsen with exposure to allergens or irritants.

4. Stretch marks

Stretch marks are common among women, especially during pregnancy or rapid weight gain or loss. They appear as pink or purplish streaks on the skin and often fade to a lighter colour over time. You can spot stretch marks mostly on the abdomen, breasts, thighs and buttocks.

DIY skincare hacks for skin problems

Try these skincare recipes with ingredients from your kitchen. These popular skincare hacks may work wonders for you, but it is always advisable to do a patch test before going full throttle to avoid allergies and infections.

1. Hydrating face mask for normal to dry skin

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons of mashed avocado
• 1 tablespoon of honey
• 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt

Method:

Mix all the ingredients, apply the mixture to your clean face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Avocado is rich in healthy fats and vitamins while honey is a natural humectant, which means it can help to preserve moisture. Yoghurt, on the other hand, provides probiotics for skin health, says Dr Sharma.

2. Oatmeal for eczema

Oatmeal baths

• Grind colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oatmeal) into a powder using a food processor or blender.
• Add one to two cups of the colloidal oatmeal to a warm bath.
• Gently agitate the water to ensure even distribution of the oatmeal.
• Soak in the bath for 15 to 20 minutes, gently rubbing the oatmeal water mixture onto your skin.
• Pat your skin dry gently with a clean, soft towel, but avoid rubbing.

Oatmeal baths can help soothe itchy and inflamed skin, providing relief from eczema symptoms.

Oatmeal paste

Mix ground oatmeal with a small amount of water to create a thick paste. Apply the paste directly to the affected areas of your skin, leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes, rinse off with cool water, and pat dry. Oatmeal paste can be used for spot treatments for areas affected by eczema. This can help to provide relief from itching and irritation.

3. Aloe vera for stretch marks

Apply pure aloe vera gel, which helps to promote skin healing and hydration, to the stretch marks and massage gently. Aloe vera gel is rich in water content, which helps to hydrate and moisturise the skin. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and may contribute to the reduction of the appearance of stretch marks. Aloe vera contains compounds like vitamins, minerals and amino acids that support the body’s natural healing processes, says the expert. When massaged onto stretch marks, it can help to repair damaged skin tissues and reduce the prominence of stretch marks over time.

4. Turmeric and honey face mask for acne

Ingredients

• 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
• 1 tablespoon of honey

Method

• Combine turmeric with honey and apply the mixture evenly as a mask to your face.
• Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Turmeric happens to be a natural anti-inflammatory agent that is known for its potential to reduce skin inflammation. Honey, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants and possesses natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. When combined with turmeric, it can help soothe inflamed skin and may contribute to preventing acne.
