Ghana Association of Women and Youth in Herbal Medicine Practice pays courtesy call on Health Minister

The Ghana Association of Women and Youth in Herbal Medicine Practice paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to discuss the contributions of traditional medicine to the health sector and advocate for greater support for its practice.

During the meeting, the Association highlighted key challenges facing the Traditional and Herbal Medicine sector, stressing the need for a wider distribution of traditional medicines in hospitals to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals. Members also underscored the economic potential of herbal medicine and called for the integration of more herbal units into the new hospitals being constructed under the Agenda 111 project.

Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh reaffirmed his commitment to supporting traditional medicine and assured the Association that the sector would receive the recognition it deserves.

He further revealed that the President has included provisions for the advancement of traditional medicine in his manifesto. He also encouraged the Association to attract investors to the sector, emphasizing that private investment would help ease the financial burden on the government while promoting sustainable growth.

The meeting was attended by representatives from several herbal associations, including the Ghana Christian Herbal Doctors Association (GCHDA), Sankofa Traditional Herbal Medicine Practitioners Association of Ghana (STHMPAG), Ahaban Nnouro Nkabom Kuo (ANNK), Ghana Association of Faith Healers & TBA (GAFH-TBA), and the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH). The discussions marked a significant step toward strengthening traditional medicine’s role in Ghana’s healthcare system.
