The 20th anniversary of the Department of Herbal Medicine, KNUST was launched on the 16th June 2021 at the Auditorium of the Faculty.
In attendance were the Chairman of the Launch and Dean of the Faculty, Professor Berko Panyin Anto, the Head of the Herbal Medicine Department, Professor Isaac Ayensu, and a number of notable alumni of the department including the President of the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalist (GAMH), Dr. (M.H) Anthony Mensah.
The theme for the anniversary is: RAISING THE PROMINENCE OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN GHANA’S HEALTH SYSTEMS–INTROSPECTING AND CONSOLIDATING OUR GAINS.
The President of the Ghana Herbal Medical Students’ Association (GHEMSA), Master Daniel Oppong Peprah Koranteng, gave a warm welcome address to the GHEMSA populace.
The Dean of the Faculty and the President of GAMH shared profound words of support and showed readiness to skyrocket the Herbal Medicine programme to a higher height by any possible means.
The Head of Department spoke expressively on the current state of the department and the plans taken to better the students association, GHEMSA. In his speech, he did say, “GHEMSA is here to stay, and it is, therefore, necessary to enhance the visibility and acceptability of Herbal Medicine.” He assured members of GHEMSA that the BSc. Herbal Medicine programme would soon be a 6-year Doctor of Herbal Medicine programme. He added that the programme would be sectioned into two: Doctor of Clinicals and Doctor of Pharmaceuticals or Production. He also threw light on the plans of ensuring and achieving a one-health system through dialogues between all health care heads in the school and emphasized the acquisition of an herbal clinic in the school in order to smoothen and enhance the clinical practice of the Herbal Medical students.
In addition, Professor Isaac Ayensu acknowledged the unity that exists between the fraternal arms of Herbal Medicine practice in Ghana i.e GHAFTRAM, GAMH, and other traditional arms; and also added that there would exist a special training for all members of these arms in order for them to acquire unique certificates which would equip them with the requisite skills needed to guide Herbal Medical students who may visit their facilities as interns.
The entire students populace is looking forward to the Medical outreach and the Grand Durbar which have been respectively scheduled on the 16th and 17th of July, 2021.
GHEMSA has a promising future, and it is now!
