As part of the Government initiative to support Traditional medicine in the country, enlisting recommended herbal medicines to the national health insurance medicine list is a major block towards achieving this feat. The Director for Traditional And Alternative Medicine Directorate, Dr. Mrs Anastasia Yirenkye announced that, before the end of the year, recommended herbal medicines would be enlisted onto the national health insurance list to help reduce the cost burden for people who patronize herbal medicine services at various hospitals
She made this statement at the 20th Anniversary celebration of the Ghana Herbal Medicine Association- KNUST where she emphasized that Ghana is the only one with the unique training for Medical Herbalists in West Africa.
As it stands now, the country has successfully integrated fifty-five (55) herbal medicine units across the public hospitals in the country with about 120 Medical Herbalists who are practitioners in various units
An annual celebration of the Traditional Medicine Week is something the country can be proud of, she said. It serves as a platform for advocacy, dissemination of information, an exhibition of Traditional medicine products and services, strengthen collaboration and partnership, socializing, and networking.
Again, the Directorate is still in the process of developing guidelines for the evaluation of herbal medicines as well as recommended Herbal medicine lists that will guide practitioners in the choice of their prescription.
She commended the Honourable Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu for his immense contribution towards the development of Herbal Medicine in the country and Africa.
