On Monday, February 17, 2025, the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM) at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH). The ceremony, held at the UHAS campus, was chaired by Prof. Lydia Aziato, Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, with support from Prof. Frank Edwin, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and Mrs. Yaa Amakwa Opuni, Registrar.

The GAMH delegation, led by Dr. Sandra Ashong (President), Dr. Prince Osei (Vice President), and Dr. Ronald Yeboah (General Secretary), was warmly received by the university leadership. ITAM was represented by Prof. Kwame Banga (Director), Mrs. Rosemary Agbefu (Head of Administration), Mr. Michael Frimpong Baidoo (Acting Head of Education and Advocacy), Mr. Nathaniel Nene Djangmah Nortey (Acting Head of Natural Products Sourcing), and Mrs. Rose Letsu (Principal Administrative Assistant).

In her opening remarks, Prof. Aziato commended the collaboration between ITAM and GAMH, highlighting the MOU’s objectives to:
- Strengthen academic and research partnerships in traditional medicine.
- Enhance professional training and development for medical herbalists.
- Promote evidence-based practices and regulatory alignment.
- Support policy advocacy and integration of herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare.

Responding to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ashong expressed GAMH’s satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing the association’s commitment to providing academic support to its members through this partnership.
To ensure effective implementation of the MOU, two GAMH members have been appointed to the joint steering committee.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in advancing traditional and alternative medicine in Ghana, fostering greater research, education, and professional excellence in the field.
