Herbal Medicine, just like other Alternative Medicine has been in the system from time past; even when certain scientific authentications had not come to light.
In our generation, science has proven to give meanings and justifications to some of these alternative ways of keeping the human race healthy.
In the fraternity of Herbal Medicine especially, most herbs or medicinal plants have been scientifically proven to possess certain therapeutic properties which cannot be overlooked. It is no doubt that some of these discoveries led to and still leads to the discovery of drugs (synthetic or orthodox drugs) for general wellbeing.
There has been some tension among healthcare practitioners as to whether or not Herbal Medicines should be readily welcomed and accepted in the primary healthcare system. This seems rectified as over 20 Government Hospitals have Herbal Medicine units.
Now, from the humble and sincere accounts of some Medical Officers and Medical Herbalists on the field of their profession, most patients have had their medical conditions improved, by reason of combination therapy of both orthodox and herbal medicines.
Over some time now, people are encouraged to either take orthodox or herbal medicines. This is aimed at preventing some drug-drug interactions that may be of harm to the patient.
However, from some of the experiences of our noble Medical Herbalists and Medical Officers, its high time researchers and practitioners give room for a combination therapy instead of using these medicines individually.
Notwithstanding, the general public is still advised to desist from self-medication. Always consult your physicians before taking any form of medication.
Paracelsus of blessed memory said that all substances are poison; there is none that is not poison. The right dose differentiates a poison from a remedy.
