Dietician warns against roadside fried foods

Renowned dietician Mrs. Efua Owusu Ansah has raised concerns about the health risks associated with consuming fried foods sold by roadside vendors, particularly those prepared with reused oil.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s Nyansapo morning show on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the Principal Dietician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital cautioned that many vendors excessively reuse oil, turning it into a health hazard.

“For the past 12 years, we have observed that most of these food vendors can use their one oil for frying food for over two weeks without changing it,” she revealed. “They only add fresh oil to the old one, making it dangerous to human health.”

Mrs. Owusu Ansah explained that while oil is essential in moderation, prolonged use and overheating can release harmful compounds that pose serious health risks.

She urged the public to pay attention to what they eat, especially from street vendors, warning that poor food choices could lead to life-threatening illnesses.

Mrs. Owusu Ansah also encouraged Ghanaians to adopt healthier eating habits and prioritise food safety to promote long-term well-being.
