Drop “Dr.” title or provide proof – GTEC to acting Registrar of Traditional Medicine Practice Council

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has written to the Acting Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), Yakubu Tobor Yusuf, demanding clarification and documentation over his use of the academic title “Dr. (MH).”

In a letter dated October 13, 2025, and addressed to Mr. Yusuf, GTEC stated that it had taken note of his use of the title “Dr. (MH)” and affirmed that it had not granted approval for him to use the title.

Citing Section 7(i) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), the Commission said it is mandated to evaluate and authenticate both local and foreign academic qualifications and therefore, requires Mr. Yusuf to submit relevant documentation for verification.

GTEC has asked the Acting Registrar to provide:

  • The full name(s) of the awarding institution(s),
  • A copy of the relevant degree certificate(s), and
  • A copy of the official academic transcript(s).

The Commission directed that if Mr. Yusuf fails to provide the required documentation, he must immediately cease the use of the title “Dr.” in all forms and representations, including official documents, professional profiles, websites, digital platforms, and letterheads.

The directive has also been copied to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health for enforcement action.

GTEC further instructed that all documentation or confirmation of title withdrawal should be submitted no later than October 24, 2025, and urged Mr. Yusuf to fully cooperate with the process.
