GAMH Advocates for Integrated Healthcare: Calls for Final Step to Universal Coverage

More than ten years after Ghana first pledged to blend traditional healing with modern hospital care, the process remains incomplete and fragmented, according to the country’s leading body of medical herbalists.

The Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH) is now demanding urgent, “decisive action” to finalize the integration, arguing that further delay undermines healthcare equity and resilience.

The call was issued during a high-level symposium that brought together government health officials, the World Health Organization (WHO), academics, and practitioners. The meeting spotlighted a persistent gap between policy and practice.

While national blueprints like the Health Sector Medium-Term Development Plan and the Universal Health Coverage Roadmap acknowledge traditional medicine as a vital complementary service, implementation on the ground has been “partial and uneven.”

A Prescription for Progress

To break the stalemate, experts at the symposium prescribed a clear cure: a time-bound national roadmap. Key recommendations include:

  • Systemic Embedding: Weaving traditional medicine seamlessly into primary healthcare delivery.
  • Financial Inclusion: Progressive coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
  • Legal & Regulatory Reform: Updating frameworks to support safe and standardized practice.
  • Boosted Investment: Directing more funds into research, training, and capacity building.

The Payoff: Choice, Access, and Resilience

Advocates argue that completing this integration isn’t just about tradition—it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive health system for all Ghanaians. The move promises to broaden patient choice, improve equitable access in underserved communities, and bolster the nation’s overall health system resilience.

The ball is now in the government’s court to translate years of discussion into tangible, nationwide action.
