Kenya’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday launched the national reproductive health policy 2022-2032 to help boost women’s health.
Susan Mochache, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the policy provides a roadmap to eliminate pregnancy-related deaths and illnesses as well as harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.
“The policy also recognizes the right to attaining the desired healthy family size through managing infertility or spacing births using modern methods of contraception,” Mochache added.
According to the ministry, the policy also addresses maternal health, adolescence and young adults’ reproductive health as well as marginalized persons and age cohorts in reproductive health.
Mochache said that the policy spans the entire lifespan of Kenyan’s reproductive health care needs as well as the ongoing concern of teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, all the way to the senior citizen who is struggling with a silent epidemic of unique reproductive health needs such as menopause and andropause.’
She said that the policy was launched at a time when humanity has come under ever-increasing threat of being undermined by cumulative non-communicable lifestyle diseases and communicable diseases such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The ministry expressed optimism that the policy will be embraced by all actors and implemented effectively for the good of all Kenyans. Enditem
