Dr Appiah Alfred Ampomah who is the Current Deputy Director for the Centre for Plant Medicine Research Akwapim Mampong, speaking with rafamallgh shed more light on one of the popular quotes, “Let Food Be Thy Medicine And Medicine Be Thy Food”.

He explained, If all of us as a people will live by this simple statement, it can prevent a lot of diseases via quality nutrition, nutraceuticals, herbs, and exercise. According to him, we have to be selective about what we eat and have health in mind; One must ask himself/herself, “If I eat this food, what are the health benefits?”.

He emphasized food can provide us health benefits or create diseases for us. In the past, our fathers and grandfathers used to stay healthy by taking potion/ “dudo” and natural foods which prevented common diseases like worm infestation, malaria typhoid unlike currently, where we have people in their 30s and 40s with chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and stroke, its very unfortunate, He said.

Many unhealthy foods are currently been advertised on the media unknowingly. He stressed, people like unhealthy foods because of a lack of knowledge. “If people are made to understand these unhealthy foods effect on their bodies in long term, many would have changed their eating habit. However, some people are beginning to abstain from things like sugar, alcohol, smoking et al.

If you dont make your food a medicine, Oneday your medicine will become your food.
