C membranaceus is a monoecious herb up to 2m in height with slender and densely stellate hairy branches. The root bark contains scopoletin and julocrotine, a glutarimide alkaloid. Xylopia consists of dried matured fruits of Xylopia aethiopica. An evergreen, aromatic tree growing up to 15m high; bark slightly ridged.
