Aloe-emodin is responsible for the antiviral and antifungal properties of the plant (Van Zyl and Viljoen, 2001).

Cloves, and the essential oil contained in them, are often used medicinally. Two little-known compounds in clove oil have shown ‘strong activity’ against bacteria associated with plaque formation and gum disease.
