The indole alkaloid echitamine, which showed several pharmacological activities including hypotensive activity and relaxing activity of the smooth muscles. The bark, leaves and roots are all used to relieve rheumatic pain and other pains.

Dosage
Decoction: 30-50 g of the stem bark powder per litre of water; drink 3-4 cups a day
Adverse effects
Excessive or prolonged use has been linked to conditions such as Steven Johnson’s syndrome.
Contraindications
Pregnancy and lactation, liver dysfunctions.
