An erect, hardy and bulbous perennial herb up to 60 cm in height, with a central bulb covered in scales in the axil. Xylopia consists of dried matured fruits of Xylopia aethiopica. An evergreen, aromatic tree growing up to 15m high; bark slightly ridged.
