C membranaceus is a monoecious herb up to 2m in height with slender and densely stellate hairy branches. The root bark contains scopoletin and julocrotine, a glutarimide alkaloid. An erect, hardy and bulbous perennial herb up to 60 cm in height, with a central bulb covered in scales in the axil.
