Grains of paradise consists of the dried mature seeds of Aframomum melegueta. A tufted leafy herbaceous perennial plant up to 2m high; leaves are distichously arranged. Although used mainly as a condiment, the seeds also have a stimulant action on the digestive system, strengthening and warming the stomach. They are used to alleviate indigestion, flatulence and bloating and help to relieve abdominal discomfort due to colic or griping. The seeds can help to reduce or prevent vomiting and to bring relief from nausea. They have also been used as an aphrodisiac. The seed is used to treat head colds, influenza, slight abdominal pains, constipation, menstrual pains and rheumatism. Combined with Zingiber officinale, they are used to treat colds and fever. Crushed in citron juice, they are employed for treating glandular problems. The pulverised seeds are used in an enema for treating constipation pains, and are mixed with mustard oil in an ointment for easing arthritis pains. The seeds are pulverised with the seeds of Piper nigrum and then mixed with coconut oil to make an ointment that is used to treat general swellings and pains. Studies on the sexual behaviour of male rats showed that A. melegueta and P. guineense increased sexual arousal (Kamtchouing et al., 2002).

Administration of a leaf decoction to a 49-year-old female diabetic patient caused her fasting blood sugar level to fall from 242 mg/dl to about 120 mg/dl after 12 weeks, remaining at this level for eight weeks (Addae-Mensah, 1992). A 45-year old hypertensive woman, who had diabetes diagnosed on routine examination had her fasting blood sugar level of 370 mg/dl reduced to 250 mg/dl after one week and continued to fall until it normalized after eleven weeks on immediate administration of B. ferruginea. No medication was prescribed for her hypertension, but her blood pressure fell from 180/90 to 140/90 during the treatment period (Addae-Mensah, 1992; Ampofo, 1977). Aqueous extracts of the leaves were able to normalize the fasting blood glucose levels and helped in eliminating glycosuria of patients with maturity-onset diabetes (Iwu, 1993). -

Cloves, and the essential oil contained in them, are often used medicinally. A spicy, warming, stimulant herb, it is strongly antiseptic, relieves pain, controls nausea and vomiting, improves digestion, protects against intestinal parasites, and causes uterine contractions. Cloves are taken internally as a tea in the treatment of internal parasites, stomach upsets, chills, and impotence. The flower buds are chewed to freshen the breath or ease the pain of toothache.

Bitter leaf consists of the fresh or dried leaves of Vernonia amygdalina .A shrub or small tree, 2-5 m high with striate pubescent branches, becoming glabrous on maturity; leaves alternate, obovate-lanceolate, entire or finely toothed. Bitterleaf is a highly appreciated vegetable in West and Central Africa and can be consumed in various dishes. Leaf decoctions are used to treat fever, malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis and cough, as a laxative and as a fertility inducer. One of the most common medicinal uses of Vernonia amygdalina is as a treatment against intestinal worms including nematodes. In Zimbabwe a root infusion is used to treat sexually transmitted diseases. The bitterness is caused by sesquiterpene lactones (e.g. vernodalin, vernolepin and vernomygdin) and steroid glucosides (vernoniosides). Some of these compounds have significant antiparasitic activity, especially vernodalin and vernonioside B1. Vernolepin showed platelet anti-aggregating properties. Vernodalin and vernomygdin have cytotoxic activity.Aqueous leaf extracts containing the peptides, edotides, have been found to be potent inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), important agents for the growth of breast cancer cells; the anti-oestrogen drug, tamoxifen, is known to be an MAPK modulator (Atanaskova et al., 2002; Mandlekar and Kong, 2001). Neem extracts have shown potential hypoglycaemic properties. Oral administration of the leaf
extracts reduced blood sugar levels in normal and streptozocin-induced of diabetic models, with the
hypoglycaemic effect comparable to glibenclamide (Khosla et al., 2000). The leaf extract blocked
the effects of adrenaline on glucose metabolism and reduced peripheral glucose utilization in
diabetic and normal rats (Chattopadhyay, 1996).The anti-inflammatory properties of the plant have also been demonstrated in various studies. The water-soluble part of the alcoholic leaf extract showed anti-inflammatory activity in the cotton pellet granuloma assay in vivo (Chattopadhway, 1998). Neem extracts have shown a dose-dependent anti-gastric ulcer activity in stressed rats. The extracts also caused a decrease in ethanol-induced gastric mucosal damage, an increase in the amount of adherent gastric mucus in stressed animals, and showed significant anti-histaminic potential (Garg et al., 1993). Bandyopadhyay et al (2002) have investigated the gastroprotective properties of the stem bark extract of A. indica. The gastroprotective effect was attributed to the ability to inhibit acid secretion via blockage of H+/K+-ATPase activity as well as the inhibition of oxidative damage of the gastric mucosa by blocking lipid peroxidation and scavenging endogenous hydroxyl radicals.
Leaf extracts of A. indica exhibited significant immune-stimulating effects in vivo (Ray et al, 1996). A. indica potentiated the antibody titres following typhoid H. antigen immunization and induced delayed hypersensitivity following administration of tuberculin and DNCB to animals. In human trials, extracts stimulated humoral immunity by increasing antibody levels and cell-mediated immunity by increasing total lymphocyte and T-cell count in 21 days (Ansari et al., 1997). Aqueous leaf extract was found to lower raised levels of serum liver enzymes and paracetamol-induced liver necrosis (Bhanwra et al., 2000).
