Noni is a dramatically foliaged evergreen shrub or small tree with a conical crown; it usually grows 2 – 6 metres tall, occasionally to 10 metres. The bole can be 12cm in diameter. Noni has long had a reputation for its healing qualities. The unripe fruit is used in Indian cooking in sambals and curries. Young leaves and blanched shoots – raw or steamed, added to curries etc. They contain 4.5 – 6% protein. The leaves are a rich source of vitamin A. Most parts of noni have been widely used medicinally since ancient times. The fruit contains rancid smelling capric acid and unpleasant tasting caprylic acid. It is thought that antibiotically active compounds are present.
The fruits are used as a diuretic, a laxative, an emollient and as an emmenagogue, for treating asthma and other respiratory problems

Xylopia consists of dried matured fruits of Xylopia aethiopica. An evergreen, aromatic tree growing up to 15m high; bark slightly ridged. The fruit is anthelmintic, antitussive, carminative, emmenagogue, purgative and a rubefacient to counter pain. It consists of the dried roots of Sphenocentrum jollyanum. Sphenocentrum jollyanum is a perennial under growth of dense forest. It grows to an average height of about 1.5 m, with few scanty branches. S. jollyanum leaves are wedge-shaped, about 5–12 cm wide, smooth on both sides, and can grow up to about 20 cm long with a small-arrowed apex.
The root is used as an aphrodisiac tonic for men. The sap from chewing sticks made from the root is believed to relieve stomach-ache and constipation, and to boost appetite and sexual drive. Sphenocentrum jollyanum has shown anti-oxidant, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antinociceptive, antitumor, antiviral, laxative, stomachic, tonic and aphrodisiac activities.
